PRACTICAL GUIDE

Where can you find consulting assignments with international organizations?

Start with UNGM and UNDP procurement notices, then check World Bank opportunities according to the type of contract you want. Before applying, establish whether the notice is for an individual consultant or a consulting firm.

An assignment can match your skills and still require a business structure, language or availability you do not have. The aim is a credible application, rather than a response to every notice containing the word “ consultant ”.

Are you looking for an assignment or a staff job?

UNGM advertises individual consultant opportunities: service contracts for expertise or deliverables. UN staff jobs belong on the organizations’ career sites. If you work independently, look for “ Call for individual consultants ” on UNGM.

Decide how you will apply, too. A firm may propose a team; an individual presents their own profile. Read the terms of reference for the applicant type, working languages, travel and availability required.

Which websites should you watch?

UNDP says most of its opportunities are available free on its procurement notices website and UNGM. Its country offices also publish information about their activities. Keep a small set of sources suited to your expertise and the countries where you can work.

On UNGM’s Procurement opportunities page, try the organization, beneficiary country or opportunity type filters, and select active opportunities. The beneficiary country helps narrow your search; read the terms of reference to establish where the consultant will work and who is eligible.

For the World Bank, distinguish contracts purchased directly by the Group from opportunities in projects it finances. In a financed project, the buyer may be the borrower or implementing entity. “ World Bank-financed ” does not mean you should send your application to the Bank.

Which route should you use for a World Bank opportunity?

Project Procurement links to opportunities in financed projects. For assignments purchased directly by the Group, check Corporate Procurement and its notices. The World Bank has replaced eConsultant2 with WBGeProcure RFx Now for the relevant consulting opportunities.

Open the notice before creating an account or sending a CV. Identify the buyer, recipient and response channel. Treat a request for expressions of interest, or EOI, according to its instructions. Do not turn it into a full priced proposal unless that is requested.

Do you need an account before applying?

UNGM offers an individual consultant account. For tenders managed in Quantum, UNDP’s supplier portal lets applicants access documents, communicate with procurement and submit responses. Follow the link and instructions in the relevant notice.

Set up the required access before the final day and make sure you can log in. Registration is not an application, and a profile on one platform does not mean your access to another is ready.

What belongs in a consultant’s application?

Keep a working folder with an up-to-date CV, a short description of your specialism and a few detailed project references. Treat it as material to adapt, rather than a package to send unchanged to every organization. Supply what the notice asks for in the specified format.

For each reference, explain the context, your role and what you delivered. If a methodology is requested, show how you would produce the deliverables. If a price is required, use the stated format and check the assumptions about travel and availability.

How do you turn a notice into a submitted application?

Read the participation section first. Some UNGM notices lead to an electronic procurement system; others specify another channel. Use the buyer’s instructions, complete the required submission steps and check the final status when one is provided.

Ask a question if a deliverable, working location or condition remains unclear. Use the notice’s contact and clarification deadline. A precise question helps you plan a response; it should not become an application sent to an unrelated recipient.

What if you have no international project references yet?

Read the eligibility conditions before ruling yourself out because of the organization’s name. If the notice requires specific international experience you do not have, respect that condition. Otherwise, assess whether your local work demonstrates the expertise and outcomes requested.

A sensible first target is an assignment whose context, language and deliverables you understand. Organise references by relevant skill rather than client prestige. Track the applications you make: requirements met, preparation effort and any outcome received. That record can help you choose the next opportunities more carefully.

WTender can help you discover shared offers. Check the deadline, applicant type and documents on the official source afterwards. Start with one suitable assignment and write a response focused on its requirements.
